Everybody knows about Rome – the history and the culture are standard learning in schools throughout the world. This is why the city is such a magnet to so many millions of tourists each and every year. It is awash with ancient ruins and offers a grand spectacle to all who visit her. A visit to Rome is akin to travelling back two thousand years in time, a private history lesson!

Ancient Rome is probably best depicted by the Colosseum; grand, large and imposing, while beautiful at the same time. Back in its day, the Colosseum really was all that the Roman Empire represented and was used for nearly five hundred years as a centre for gladiatorial games, public executions and dramas.

Another fine attraction that draws visitors by their thousands is the Baths of Caracalla which cover an area of almost thirteen hectares. During its heyday it could accommodate sixteen hundred bathers in the bathing rooms and pool areas. It is probably best described as Ancient Rome’s equivalent of a large shopping/entertainment centre as there was also shopping facilities and markets as well as a public library.
Lovers of fine architecture will take great delight at the Renaissance and Baroque style buildings which can be found in the city, with the Piazza del Campidoglio probably the most stunning Renaissance designed building in the whole of Rome.

Other fine Renaissance buildings that grace the city include the Palazzo Farnese, the Palazzo Venezia and the Palazzo del Quirinale, all of which belonged to some of Rome’s most influential and powerful families. A wonderful example of a Baroque style of architecture is the Fontana di Trevi, a monument loved and enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Rome is the ideal place for a lovely relaxing or even romantic weekend away with some excellent hotels in Rome. With a plethora of restaurants, bars and open-air cafes to complement the wonderful history of the city, exploring will never be a chore.
For those thinking about the delights of a Roman weekend away, whether it’s for romance or to sample the city’s amazing history, the UNESCO protected  historical quarter offers a great range of hotels right at its centre. Staying in the historical quarter means that not only will a visitor enjoy being looked after in top-rated accommodation but they will also get to discover the city’s wonderful history right on their doorstep.
